What is Counselling?

You many already know a lot about counselling, you may have seen counselling taking place on the television, you may have read books about it, or you may know nothing at all. If you're curious about what counselling is and how it works, then please read on.

The professional body of which I am a registered member, the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) says that:
Therapy provides a safe and confidential space for you to talk to a trained professional about your issues and concerns. Your therapist will help you explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviours so you can develop a better understanding of yourself and of others.

And that is a perfect description of what I do. As a professional counsellor, I won't offer you my opinions or make suggestions as to what you should do, but I will help you find your own solutions to issues you're facing. I'm not a doctor so I won't prescribe medication, nor will I give you a 'diagnosis'.
The BACP website contains lots of really useful information about what counselling is, and what it isn't, and what to expect. There's a page here that you might find helpful.
